A Simple Guide to Postpartum Recovery in Hong Kong

Everything new mothers ask us about postnatal care, belly binding, and getting your body back — explained in plain language.

What is postpartum recovery?

Postpartum recovery is the care your body needs in the weeks after birth. In Chinese culture this period is known as confinement, or 坐月. Good postnatal care helps your uterus shrink back to size, your abdominal wall heal, and your energy slowly return. Our nurse-led postpartum massage supports each of these steps in your own home, so you never have to travel with a newborn.

Postpartum massage vs. prenatal massage

Prenatal massage (pre natal) is given during pregnancy. It is meant to ease the discomfort of a growing bump. It is usually done in a comfortable reclined position and focuses on the neck, the shoulders and lower legs.

Postpartum massage (post natal) is different. It begins after birth and works on the abdomen, the uterus, and the connective tissue that stretched during pregnancy. We specialise in postnatal massage, but the same gentle, nurse-trained touch can also ease the discomfort in your neck and shoulders after long nights of feeding.

What is belly binding in Hong Kong?

Belly binding in Hong Kong — known as 紮肚 — wraps a long cloth firmly around your midsection. We use two traditional methods: bengkung and rebozo. Binding supports the abdominal wall, helps close the diastasis recti gap, improves posture, and gives gentle compression that many mothers find comforting. Because our practitioner is a registered nurse, the wrap is applied with proper knowledge of your anatomy — never too tight, never unsafe.

Diastasis recti, the abdominal wall, and your pelvic floor

Diastasis recti is the natural separation of the rectus abdominis muscles during pregnancy. It affects up to 60% of women after birth. The gap runs along the connective tissue of the linea alba in your abdominal wall.

Healing is not only about the gap. Your pelvic floor also weakens during pregnancy and birth. We measure your diastasis recti at every visit and use targeted massage and binding to support both the abdominal wall and the pelvic floor as they recover together.

Postpartum massage vs. a confinement nanny

A confinement nanny in Hong Kong — known as 月嫂 — usually lives with your family for a month. She helps with cooking, household tasks, infant care, baby care, and overnight feeds.

Our service is different, and the two work well together. A confinement nanny looks after your daily routine and your baby. We focus only on your physical recovery — postpartum massage, belly binding, diastasis recti, and C-section scar care. Many Hong Kong mothers book both at the same time: a confinement nanny for baby care, and our nurse for their own body.

When should I start?

Whenever you are ready, we will meet you at home, anywhere across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories.

Traditional belly binding vs. a binding belt

Traditional belly binding (bengkung) uses a long cotton cloth, wrapped layer by layer by hand and tailored to your body. The tension is adjusted from session to session as your diastasis recti gap narrows and your body recovers — it is about technique, placement, and pressure, not just support.

A shop-bought binding belt (postpartum support band) is convenient, but it is one fixed size that rarely follows your changing postpartum shape, and worn too tightly it can press on the pelvic floor. Alongside binding, we show you how to use a support belt correctly day to day — the two work together, they don't compete.

How much does belly binding cost in Hong Kong?

Belly binding in Hong Kong typically costs HKD 1,000–1,500 per session, with traditional binding usually at the higher end; some spa and beauty venues charge HKD 2,400+. Our packages work out to HKD 1,100–1,300 per session and already include the registered-nurse assessment, abdominal massage, and binding — transparent pricing, no hidden extras.

When choosing a service, look beyond price: does the practitioner hold a nursing or medical qualification? Do they assess diastasis recti? How do they handle a C-section scar? Do they really come to your home? These — not just who is cheapest or most recommended — decide how safe and effective your recovery is.

Postpartum wellness: binding is only the first step

Traditional postpartum wellness — the Chinese practice of confinement, 坐月 — is about restoring the body from the inside out. Binding helps the abdominal wall and uterus recover, but complete recovery also needs rest, balanced nutrition, hydration, and a gradual return to pelvic-floor and core movement.

As a registered nurse, at every home visit we tailor wellness guidance — nutrition, posture, and exercise — to your stage of recovery. It is never just binding; it is walking the full postpartum recovery journey with you.

Frequently Asked Questions 常見問題

For vaginal deliveries, postpartum massage can typically begin 21–28 days after birth. For C-section deliveries, we recommend waiting 6 weeks post-surgery, once your OB-GYN confirms the incision is healing well. Our nurse will assess your readiness at the first visit.
Belly binding (bengkung / rebozo) is a traditional postpartum practice where cloth is wrapped firmly around the abdomen. It supports the uterus, helps close the diastasis recti gap, improves posture, and provides gentle compression. Our nurse applies the binding with proper knowledge of abdominal anatomy.
Yes, with proper timing and technique. As a registered nurse, our practitioner avoids direct pressure on the surgical scar until fully healed and provides guidance on scar tissue management to prevent adhesions. We always require clearance from your OB-GYN before the first session.
Diastasis recti is the separation of the rectus abdominis muscles during pregnancy — it affects up to 60% of women postpartum. Our nurse measures the gap clinically and uses targeted massage combined with binding to support muscle recovery. Severe cases (>3 finger-widths) need our post-partum exercise to speed up recovery.
Yes! We provide in-home service across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories — including Discovery Bay, Tung Chung, and Lantau. Sessions happen in the comfort of your own home.
Our packages range from HKD 6,500 (5 sessions) to HKD 16,500 (15 sessions). Per-session rates are HKD 1,100–1,300 — competitively priced for nurse-led, medically-informed care compared to spa alternatives charging HKD 2,400+ without medical expertise.
We don't provide full confinement nanny (月嫂) or live-in services, but our nurse-led postnatal massage programme complements confinement care perfectly. Many clients book us alongside their confinement arrangements for specialised physical recovery — diastasis recti care, C-section scar guidance, and pelvic floor support. We also offer infant care advice and baby care guidance during sessions.
Belly binding in Hong Kong typically costs HKD 1,000–1,500 per session, with traditional binding at the higher end. Beyond price, check whether the practitioner holds a nursing or medical qualification, assesses diastasis recti, and truly visits your home. Our nurse-led packages are HKD 1,100–1,300 per session, including assessment, abdominal massage, and binding.
Traditional belly binding uses a long cotton cloth wrapped by hand and tailored to your body, with tension adjusted each session as you recover. A binding belt is a convenient one-size elastic band that rarely fits your changing shape and can press on the pelvic floor if too tight. We use binding and also teach you to use a support belt correctly — they complement each other.
